I'm currently working on an exclusive assignment to recruit a Principal Developer on behalf of one of the UK’s most advanced tech retailers in the UK.
And what a journey the company is embarking on. With years of technical debt, the transformation is in place to rearchitect their platforms to separate their vast estate into independently deployable products and to move to an event driven, cloud first architecture base around which they’re rebuilding cross functional teams.

10+ years of adding features can leave a lot of technical debt with a monolithic database and we are no different. We have the backing from our board to replatform everything to move to a fully microservice based architecture and our CEO is driving our move to a product engineering culture.”
The role: Principal Developer
A new role within the organisation, the Principal Developer role has been created to provide teams and individuals with strong technical leadership in product design and development through consultation, evangelism, guidance, influence and support.
Working across all the squads (currently there are 20), you will be advocating great engineering practises, coaching / teaching these to the various teams who want to deliver value quickly, fail fast and most importantly want to learn together.
With the freedom and autonomy to approach the crafting and development of a world class technical platform and the empowerment and enablement of teams in just about any way you see fit, some of the key areas you will be expected to deliver include:
• Helping teams measure technical debt and have strategies to tackle through helping with the creation of technical backlogs, refactoring and testing strategies
• Standardising the API platform and communication strategy
• Being a key contributor in our architectural working group
• Helping the teams to appropriately break up the existing applications into smaller, discreet products
• Supporting our transition to a world of continuous improvement and delivery

We are looking for a Principal Developer, a craftsman, a technology evangelist and someone very much at the top of their game.
You will be highly experienced, and very comfortable, advising on architectural strategies at departmental level, guiding tool choices and utilisation at Team of Teams level.
You will be a team player, you loves working with various teams, and someone who thrives in a coaching capacity. You’ll also not be afraid to ship code if you feel it’s required.
This role requires someone with a deep understanding of Back End technologies (specifically C#, .Net Core and AWS), frameworks, tools and best practice, and extensive experience in architecture, API design and building scalable, distributable, maintainable and high-performance software.
And most importantly, we are looking for someone is observant, driven, proactive, resourceful, approachable and self-directed; able to connect with developers of all levels of experience.
Interview process: during Covid-19, we will be arranging a remote 2 stage interview process: Stage 1) General meet & greet interview with Engineering Manager | Stage 2) Pair programming exercise, architectural white board session, in depth discussion with Head of Engineering.
