We’re seeking an experienced SQL Server DBA/Developer on a contract basis to play a key role in migrating and modernising a high-profile e-commerce data warehouse into a new environment. You’ll be accountable for the design, creation, upgrade and migration of database systems into AWS RDS, ensuring performance, security, and full alignment with internal database standards and change controls.
This is a hands-on role for someone with deep SQL Server expertise and strong SSIS/SSRS/SSAS capability, particularly around managing and troubleshooting ETL loads. Prior experience migrating SQL Server workloads to AWS RDS (and ideally using AWS DMS) will be highly valued.
Person Requirements
10+ years’ experience as an MS SQL Server Developer/DBA, with a strong focus on:
- SSIS and SSRS (including deep experience managing DTS packages and troubleshooting ETL loads)
- SSAS (preferred/beneficial)
- ETL-oriented database design, development, and implementation
PLUS:
- Strong cloud database experience, ideally including: AWS RDS, AWS DMS, On-prem to cloud migration delivery experience
- CI/CD and change control experience, preferably including: GitLab, Jenkins pipelines & Flyway for database deployments
- Familiarity with Typescript and AWS CDK for deployments (preferred)
- Experience working within ITIL frameworks and throughout the project lifecycle
- Working knowledge of Agile/Kanban environments
- Tooling/ways of working experience with: ServiceNow, Confluence, Database monitoring tools such as Foglight, Databricks (beneficial)
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving capability and a proactive, autonomous mindset
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills (working with SRE, Service Management, Data Services, Development, Architecture, and third parties)
- Microsoft SQL Server certification (2016/2019)
Key Responsibilities
- Design, create, upgrade and migrate SQL Server databases into AWS RDS using existing schemas and configurations
- Script, test and implement database migrations/changes following best practice for performance and reliability
- Resolve compatibility issues identified during migration and upgrades
- Ensure database performance, availability and security compliance with the company standards (including GDPR principles)
- Work within established change processes, including: DDL change process (Flyway deployments using GitLab and Jenkins) and ITIL change management
- Collaborate closely with front-end and wider engineering teams, joining squads as required to improve code quality and delivery outcomes
- Create and share DDL change templates for stakeholder use
- Automate deployment of database code via Flyway and Git
- Develop custom scripts to automate routine DBA tasks
- Create and maintain database refresh processes where required
- Troubleshoot database issues and deliver resolutions within agreed SLAs
- Communicate effectively and contribute to knowledge sharing across the DBA team and stakeholders
